Elon Reeve Musk FRS is a business
tycoon, industrial designer, and engineer (/iln/ EE-lon; born June 28, 1971).
He founded The Boring Company, is the CEO, CTO, and chief designer of SpaceX,
as well as the early investor, CEO, and chief product architect of Tesla, Inc.
He also co-founded Neuralink and co-founder and initial co-chairman of OpenAI.
A centibillionaire, Musk is one of the world's richest persons and a
billionaire.
Musk grew up in Pretoria, South Africa, the son of a Canadian mother and a
South African father. He briefly studied at the University of Pretoria before
moving to Canada at the age of 17 to attend Queen's University. He transferred
schools two years later and enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, where
he earned a double bachelor's degree in physics and economics before
graduating. He travelled to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University,
but he changed his mind and joined forces with his brother Kimbal to create
Zip2, a web software company. The startup was bought by Compaq in 1999 for $307
million. Musk co-founded the online bank X.com in the same year. In 2000, X.com
merged with Confinity to create PayPal, which was later purchased by eBay for
$1.5 billion in 2002.
SpaceX is an aircraft manufacturer and provider of space transportation
services that Musk created in 2002. He serves as its CEO, CTO, and lead
designer.
The
beginning of PayPal
In 1998, Musk co-founded PayPal, an
online payments system, with Peter Thiel. The service allowed users to send and
receive money without sharing their financial information with the recipient.
PayPal quickly became a success, and by 2002 it had processed more than $1
billion in payments. In October of that year, PayPal was acquired by eBay for
$1.5 billion.
Musk made $165 million from the sale of PayPal, which he used to invest in a
number of businesses, including Tesla Motors and SpaceX.

Musk has signed The Giving Pledge, agreeing to donate the majority of his
wealth to charitable causes.

1) $10 million for a global research initiative to maintain artificial
intelligence "useful for humans" to be handled by the Future of Life
Institute.
2) $1 million to the Methuselah Mouse Prize, which encourages research into
extending the lifespan of mammals.
3) $1 million to the Mars Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting the human exploration and settlement of Mars.
4) $280,000 to a Kickstarter campaign to fund development of an open-source
supercomputer designed to be used by scientists and researchers.
